Valley to Ty Cwyfan

Jez and Alison Manning were able to join us for part of the walk to the church of St. Cwyfan!

We decided that we would walk from the air field at Valley down the coast through Rhosneigr to the little church in the sea of Saint Cwyfan. We set off from Benllech in 2 cars and drive to Aberffraw.  The road from the town down to the church is very long and very narrow.  It is quite frightening to drive down the rod because there are not may places were two cards can pass each other but it is well worth it as there is enough space for about 4 or 5 cars to park.

So we left Jez’s car parked up not too far from little church and the four of us then drove to Valley airport.  We followed the road along the north side of the airport, past a hotel and down towards the beach.  We stopped short of the beach where the was room for about half a dozen card and when we walked towards the sea we came to a bigger car parking area which must have had room for 50+ cars – there were only 3!

There is a lot of construction work going on at the RAF base because it is about to become a training base for fighter pilots.  The base used to be home to the Sea King seas rescue helicopters but they have moved away now.

As soon as you reach the beach from the car park the views are stunning.  There are sandy beaches, cliffs, rocks with waves breaking over them, old white cottages and heather covered fields.  There was a lot of wind but that didn’t frighten off the hardy swimmers we saw.

We had a picnic lunch sitting in the shelter of some rocks – smoked mackerel sandwiches, hot tea, and mars bars.
